Speech of Nguyen Thi Thuong, student of HUST

On September 23, 2015

Good afternoon everybody.

Today, it’s an honor for me to talk on behalf of 40 school girls of Hanoi University of Science and Technology and to talk about my feelings in our scholarship ceremony.

Distinguished Delegates,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

4 years ago, fortunately, I was one of 100 school girls granted the Merali Scholarship in Vietnam. At that time, being a freshman, I didn’t really understand the meaning of our Scholarship. But, until now, from the bottom of my heart, the Merali Scholarship is the gift of a miracle. It is not only the financial support, but it is also a great encouragement helping me and other girls to overcome the difficulties in our life during the past 5 years.

Speech of Nguyen Thi Thuong, student of HUST

Since I joined the Merali Scholarship Family, I was acquainted with new friends. 100 girls are the sum of many different circumstances and stories, but we also have things in common, studying engineering as a major and we all come from the poor countryside. So we quickly became close. 4 years is a journey that we have gone through together while making many memories: organizing Middle Autumn Festival for children in Hanoi, visiting Vietnamese Women’s Museum, enjoying the Women’s Day together, studying English with teachers and volunteers from the Center for Education and Development, meeting the successful women in technical fields, joining in sharing experiences and job orientation, volunteer and service learning trips at Ba Vi, singing the songs together,…and so on.

When I look at the photos I took with the Merali Scholarship Family, I always find myself very lucky because I have had this big family accompanying me during 5 years of college.

I always remember the tears in the farewell ceremony for 33 school girls of Vietnam National University. And today, I understand why they cry. It feels like leaving my family to go away.

I hope that, in the future, we will be successful female engineers, and that we will meet again to look back upon these memories, so that we keep in my mind that we have developed from Merali Scholarship Fund.

I don’t know how to express my gratitude for the support from Merali Scholarship Fund, and for the help from the teachers from 3 Universities during the past years. Today, in this ceremony, we are excited to meet the representatives from the Merali Scholarship Fund, the Asia Foundation, the Centre of Education and Development and the teachers, it’s so so great for us. I can’t say any more at this moment, I only hope that, after graduation from university, the schoolgirls like us can contribute to develop the Merali Scholarship and help even more poor people.

To conclude, let me wish you all good health, and lots of success to the Merali Scholarship, now and forever.

Thank you so much!
